One of my favorite breakfast places is La Pinata where they have a fabulous Sunday buffet although I am most content when I get to order my favorite dish, Huevos Divorciados, splitting that with Mr. K and a steaming stack of tortillas. We decided to try the original location in Hayward, which is closer to us. It is much smaller and has a limited menu, which means that they don’t serve the Sunday buffet and they also don’t serve my two favorite breakfast dishes either… But this is good – it forces me to look beyond chilaquiles and try something different.

We found it to be very cozy and the service is quicker than the location in San Leandro (no doubt because there are so few tables)! We were served the same warmed tortilla chips with their spicy salsa, which I love, but it tortures my sensitive taste buds…

I ordered the New Mexico Enchilada, which comes stacked with fried eggs and their luscious refried beans and rice. I ordered the eggs done over medium and my only complaint is that the whites weren’t cooked all the way through. I love liquid runny yolks, but not liquid runny clear whites…

Under the melted cheese were two layers of lightly fried corn tortillas sandwiched in with shredded chicken and a spicy red chile sauce. Oh wow, I have a new favorite breakfast dish… The lightly crisped tortillas are what get me, they are smothered with sauce with parts that are still crunchy and chewy and filled with gooey cheese

Mr. K went with an Enchilada Verdes with Chicken that was bland and flavorless, despite the huge blob of sour cream and liberal scoops of salsa.

His plate also only came with one enchilada. It looks very demure and plain, it didn’t even have any cheese on the inside.

Mr. K wasn’t impressed with his dish, but we’ll definitely be back for the New Mexico Enchiladas and I saw some weekend specials on the menu that need to be researched… We really haven’t tried much from the regular menu yet either, so there’s even more to explore.
