note: their counter is at the back of Local: Mission Eatery dining room
This is the legendary Pomme d’Amore ($3) from Knead Patisserie in San Francisco. Have you heard of it? If you live in the area, you must try this at once! I swear I have never had such an amazingly delicious pastry… The very name is romantic, it translates to the Apple of Love and it is a flaky puff pastry that has been filled with custard which is topped with a layer of brûléed sugar. Crème brûlée in a bun… Shauna Des Voignes, who worked previously at RN74 and Ubuntu, runs this tiny pastry shop that is tucked away in the rear of Local: Mission Eatery.
I encountered this exquisite delicacy when I scored a Blackboard Eats deal for the You Knead This Pastry Collection, a hand picked assortment of their very best pastries and cookies (including the famous and adored pomme d’amore) for only ten bucks. They gave me two pomme d’amore, a couple of scones, cookies and a cinnamon twist (good but not as good those from as Brioche Bakery that I gushed about here). A nice looking pile of pastries, they threw in the extra pomme because I had to wait for them to come out of the oven, my lucky day!
And so glad was I that I scored the extra one because they were my favorite of the bunch. Here it is after I got home, so it had time to cool and settle into its pastry cocoon.
The puff pastry is flaky and rich with butter, filled with decadent vanilla custard and the crunchy crispy layer of burnt sugar oozes over and caramelizes the edge of the pastry creating a sticky candied paradise. I drool just looking at this picture…
Go on and play with the Lytro photo and click around, I know you want to…
Just looking at these tiny pots of gold ruin all thoughts of New Years resolutions for me. Well, you only live once…

Happy New Year.
Cheers,

Oh wow, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this place. But I love custard, so will definitely be hunting it down! Thanks for the heads up!
this is a pastry i’ve never seen nor made, but my goodness, it seems fantastic! i think your obsession is well-placed.
Hey, I remember this little bundle of decadence…. it (along with other Knead goodies) survived the flight from SF to Canada! It is one of the best desserts I have ever eaten, period… and I have not found anything over here that even slightly resembles it since. *sighs*
These look like Stohrer’s Puits D’Amour – one of the best things I ever ate in Paris! Glad they are showing up in SF now too.
I like the pomme d’amore. But I love the plain croissant. My daughter is also a big fan of the lemon-ricotta poptarts.
I love a good croissant, and yum doesn’t a lemon-ricotta pop tart sound delicious!
